Posing exercice : squash & stretch

Posted on 27 July 2009 by Olivier in Animation

A posing exercice based on the squash & stretch principle :

Squash & stretch is often times viewed in a cartoon aspect, when a character gets squashy and stretches like a balloon, like here for instance. But it’s important to see this principle in the real aspect, as our muscles do squash and stretch to make the movement possible : limbs movements, face expressions, etc.

Here is a little posing exercice about this, the first three poses are focused on squashed poses and the three others on stretch. I took the Hogan rig because he’s rather stiff, with no ability to make arcs with his limbs, wich is pretty interesting to make a clear “squash” pose without the cartoony way.

As for squash & stretch, posing is another great animation principle. It is part of the structure of the animation so before starting to make everything moving, it’s VERY important to have the most solid poses as possible.
